Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (TIG) Course Outline

Duration:	Four (4) weeks
Entrance Requirements:	Experienced welder at the Journeyman level, at least four (4) years.
Tuition Fee:	$1,200
Maximum Student Capacity:	16
Requirements for Successful Completion:	Pass four(4)-position bend or radiograph test

*Upon successful competion of the program,the student is awarded with a certificate.
*Students may be tested by outside agencies, ie. Department of Labour or CWB.

OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of the program the student shall:

Define GTA Welding.
Identify the equipment and supplies involved with GTAW.
Identify the various parts of a GTAW torch.
Identify the safety aspects of GTAW.
Become proficient in the flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions.

Week No. 1:

Principles of GTA Welding
Set up of equipment and become familiar with electrical terms.
Selection of various current types. (AC, DCEP, DCEN)
Selection of current ranges and settings.
Selection and adjustment of high frequency.
Connection of welding torch, grounds, and sheilding gases.

Week No. 2:

Assembling the torch.
Adjusting the sheilding gas flow meter.
Welding electrode classifications.
Preparing the tip of electrode.
Prepare metal for the flat position welding.
Determine the appropriate filler metal for the flat position.
Lay beads on plate in the flat position.
Make fillet welds on lap joints in the flat position.
make fillet welds on T-joints in the flat position.
Weld butt joints in the flat position.
Identify various weld defects.

Week No. 3-4:

Weld in the out of position: Vertical, horizontal, overhead.
Make horizontal fillet welds on lap joints.
Make horizontal butt welds.
Make horizontal fillet welds on T-joints.
Make vertical welds on T-joints.
Make vertical welds on butt joints.
Make fillet welds on T-joints in the overhead position.
Make butt welds in the overhead position.
