Welding Upgrading Course Outline
| Duration: | 8 Weeks; pending government approval. |
| Entrance Requirements: | Previous experience as a welder, or have completed a basic welding program. The student must have good hand/eye coordination and have the manipulative ability to pass a four position CWB plate test. |
Objective:
The objective of this program is to upgrade the welder's skills and enter the workforce with the confidence and ability to produce quality welds that meet industry standards.
Course Expectation:
Students will be required to pass written exams on the Sheilded Metal Arc (SMAW) process, blueprint reading and welding symbols.
All shop testing shall be visually inspected and bend tested.

- Shop safety.
- Fundamentals of the Sheilded Metal Arc (SMAW) process.
- Electrodes and Consumables.
- Blueprint reading/Welding symbols.
- Horizontal, flat, vertical and overhead positions for the SMAW process.
- Distortion and stresses in weldements.
- Power Sources.
Shop Safety:
- Proper set up and shutdown of oxyacetylene equipment.
- Safe operations of cylinders.
- Proper use of shop tools.
- Understanding ultraviolet and infrared rays.
- Ventilation.
- Types of fire extinguishers.
- Electrical safety.
Fundamentals of the Sheilded Metal Arc (SMAW) process:
- Identify the types of currents.
- Proper setting of welding current.
- Operating Voltage.
- Causes of arc blow.
- Types of power sources.
- Duty cycle.
- Electrode holder and attachments.
Electrodes and Consumables:
- Selecting the proper electrode.
- Effects of the weld.
- Mild steel electrodes.
- Electrode identification.

Blueprint Reading/Welding Symbols:
- Introduction to prints.

- Contour and finish symbols.
Horizontal, Flat, Vertical and Overhead Positions for the SMAW process(Shop):
- Make welds in the horizontal position, lap, V-groove and T-joints.
- Make welds in the flat position, lap, V-groove and T-joints.
- Make welds in the vertical position, lap, V-groove and T-joints.
- Make welds in the overhead position, lap, V-groove and T-joints.
* All V-grooves will use a backing plate.
Distortion and Stresses in Weldements:
- Understanding expansion and contraction.
- Yeild point.
- Warping.
- Prevention of distortion.
- Correcting distortion.
- Control of distortion.

Power Sources:
